Also, infectious arthritis is caused by an infection that spreads to the joint.

What are the causes of arthritis?

The causes of arthritis vary depending on the specific type of condition. The most common causes include:

  • Wear and tear on the joints: Osteoarthritis occurs when the cartilage that covers the ends of bones wears down over time. This can be caused by aging, previous joint injuries, or overuse.
  • Autoimmune diseases: Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system mistakenly attacks the joints, causing inflammation and pain. Other autoimmune diseases, such as lupus and psoriasis, can also cause arthritis.
  • Infections: Some bacterial or viral infections can cause arthritis. For example, Lyme disease, an infection transmitted by ticks, can cause arthritis in some people.
  • Genetic factors: Genetic predisposition plays an important role in the development of certain types of arthritis, such as rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis.
  • Other factors: obesity, smoking, and certain occupations that involve repetitive movements or heavy lifting can increase the risk of developing arthritis.

What symptoms do patients suffering from arthritis experience?

Symptoms of arthritis can vary depending on the type and severity of the condition. The most common symptoms include:

  • Joint pain: The pain may be constant or come and go. It may be made worse by movement or activity.
  • Joint stiffness: stiffness is more pronounced in the morning or after periods of inactivity.
  • Joint swelling: Affected joints may be swollen, warm, and tender to the touch.
  • decreased range of motion: As arthritis progresses, it may become difficult to move affected joints normally.

How does CBD oil work for arthritis?

Cannabidiol (CBD), a natural compound derived from the cannabis plant, has attracted the attention of researchers and patients as a promising therapeutic option for arthritis. Its complex interaction with the body's endocannabinoid system (ES) underlies its beneficial effects in managing the symptoms and progression of this debilitating condition.

The role of the endocannabinoid system in arthritis

The ES is a regulatory system involved in maintaining homeostasis in various physiological processes, including pain perception, inflammatory response, immune function, and bone health. In arthritis, the ES is disrupted, contributing to chronic inflammation, pain, and joint damage.

CBD interacts with the SE by modulating the activity of cannabinoid receptors, specifically CB1 and CB2 receptors. These receptors are also found in the joints, where they help regulate inflammation and pain.

Multiple anti-inflammatory effects

CBD oil has strong anti-inflammatory effects. In addition to its anti-inflammatory effects, CBD oil also has significant analgesic properties. It can interact with pain receptors in the body, such as the TRPV1 vanilloid receptor, reducing the transmission of pain signals to the brain. For example, TRPV1 is activated by capsaicin, the compound responsible for the burning sensation in chili peppers. CBD can desensitize this receptor, reducing the perception of pain.

In addition, it stimulates the release of endorphins, natural neurotransmitters with analgesic and mood-enhancing effects. Endorphins bind to opioid receptors in the brain, blocking pain transmission and producing a feeling of euphoria.

Evidence from preclinical and clinical studies

Preclinical animal studies have provided compelling evidence of CBD’s therapeutic potential in arthritis. For example, in a study of mice with induced arthritis, administration of CBD significantly reduced joint inflammation, pain, stiffness, and cartilage destruction. Other studies have shown that CBD may slow the progression of arthritis and protect joints from damage by inhibiting the production of enzymes that degrade cartilage.

Although human clinical trials are still limited, preliminary results are promising. A randomized, placebo-controlled trial evaluated the effectiveness of a CBD spray in knee osteoarthritis. After 2 weeks of treatment, patients in the CBD group reported a significant reduction in pain and improvement in physical function compared to the placebo group.
